World Listening Day 2018's theme is:
“What does your future sound like?”
We invite the participants to imagine sonic possible worlds and the future of acoustic ecology through soundwalks, field recordings, site-specific performances, and curated events and concerts on the theme. Participants can also participate in virtual worlds by listening and sharing endangered sounds and identifying sounds they want to render obsolete in their future.
Future Listening ultimately aims to engage the world in opening its ears to the present and in acknowledging the immense capacity of the act of listening in shaping our collective future.

This field recording captures the sound of a big, loud, and destructive construction machine ridding trees and bushes from my neighbor's yard. The sounds of this thing and the men tearing up the yard were too loud to ignore. I hit record, walked out of the house, and captured what I heard.
Without being able to see it I concluded that there was one machine possibly with a backhoe and rotating blades. There were men sweeping up after it and a someone in a truck parked in the alley. When I could take no more I went back inside and stopped the recorder.
This piece is a reminder that in a short period of time man can annihilate somethings that took decades to grow. Although I do find the power of this machine very interesting I consider these sounds to be toxic pollution of my living space. Future listening on my block will consist of more echo reflection to the south of my house and down the alley, less birds on the plot, and less privacy for what I do in my own yard. Those trees absorbed a lot of sound.
